This is why a lot of women keep our nerdy hobbies to ourselves and don’t really talk about them much in public.

To me, the biggest advantage of a federated tracker like this is the ability to self host without relying on any centralized service, so in no particular order

1. A community maintained repository based database system, so when someone initiate an instance of your tracker, it starts off completely empty, and then the admin can pull from a “seasonal anime” repo for the tracker to track seasonal animes, an “anime movie” repo, a “j-drama” repo " a “Hollywood movies” repo or any combination of the above, or pull from an URL for a custom tracking list.

2. Local/global average rating/rating distribution.

3. Some kind of upvote system for reviews to discourage short, low effort reviews that plagued Letterbox. Lemmy’s “active/hot” sorting algorithm is pretty good and you may be able to use just that.

4. User created lists and also the ability to share them publicly or privately.

A more accurate analogy would be along the lines of having jets and helicopters in the world but still using cars or trains as the main form of transportation.

The main factor is discoverability.

There are no shortage of creative or funny people on Mastodon, however, Mastodon’s feed algorithm do not allow them to be discovered unless you happen to stumble upon them by happenstance, whereas it is quite easy to be seen on Lemmy by posting good content: it’s rare when I don’t get any upvotes or downvotes on a comment here, and good replies are fairly common, so the interaction quality here is generally higher.

You know, it seems very unlikely that a Linux distribution would have their official support account on Tumblr of all places.

I don’t know about you, but I’m beginning to think that these are actually gimmick accounts that are impersonating official accounts for an Internet comedy bit.

“GNU is Not Unix Image Manipulation Program Tool Kit” is still a better name for GTK than “GIMP ToolKit”.

It’s a name that will definitely raise some eyebrows in the less technically inclined circles. (and maybe a few “Pulp Fiction” references about “bring out the gimp”)

Speak for yourself, I first got on Lemmy to promote a movie, and the next thing I know, I was using Arch (BTW) and moderating an Android community.

But the good news is you just kinda learn quite a bit about every hobby you pick up, so people are always impressed with how much random stuff you know.

The other day, I saw an A-list Hollywood actress going around Lemmy shitposting and promoting her latest movie on Lemmy.

She’s obviously very talented and very hot and deserves to finally get an Oscar this year, but I would say it’s pretty bizarre.

Also she’s now the top mod of !android@lemmy.world for some reason.
