I got a Turris Omnia Router, which I want to use as a NAS.
I also really like SATA SSDs, they are abundant (I have too many), never overheat (take that, NVME crap) etc.
The router is pretty tight, a SATA SSD fits in, but I need a cable to have the adapter 90° and a bit upwards.
Now I wonder, what adapter do I need? On AliExpress I find one with 1 or 2 SATA connections, 1 is probably best for sanity and reliability.
This one looks more sketchy, as it has 2 SATA sockets.
Interesting, thanks!
Could you elaborate on the power supply? I found such an adapter:
With a small 7-pin SATA cable, do SSDs need additional power?
The power supply is a typical laptop barrel jack with converter, so powering the SSD wouldnt be a good option
Well, m.2 slots (both sata and epcie) typically only provide 3.3 volt power. Standalone 2.5" sata SSD’s require a 5 volt supply. Obviously there’s a bit of a mismatch there. So you’ll likely need to find your power from a difference source like a USB port or the internal power supply.
That adapter image is a data adapter, most likely for straight-thru msata connections, and is probably what you need. but 2.5" SSD’s also require the wide 15 pin power connector in addition to the small data connector and that power has to come from something that is not the m.2 slot.
Thanks a lot! The Omnia has a ton of pins inside, I will check if some can provide power.
It has a small amount of RAM, so running a web server, NAS or torrent server would be possible. That would be great with like a 4TB SATA SSD.
Oh yeah, that’d be a great file server. Even low power CPU’s can typically serve data about as fast as a SATA-III drive can provide it.
And tbh, the CPU is 32bit which sucks I guess, I am also not sure about security disadvantages. The GrapheneOS people know way more here. Also nothing about how well Marvell really patches these old CPUs.
But SATA SSDs just beat NVMEs. I hate NVMEs. Never needed that speed, they just overheat all the time and require too much passive cooling, I destroyed an NVME because the cooling pad and the laptop bottom bent it.
I was able to cancel a miniPCIe-SATA adapter buy on Aliexpress and got an electrical mSATA-SATA adapter instead, way simpler and probably faster.
Just need to find out if power is needed and from where to get it.
