There was a thread a long long time ago back when the app was just created discussing the best way to handle “hide read”. Essentially it boiled down to the behavior you see today, which is that the hide read state resets on refresh or if you close the app and reopen the app. I am open to revisit this behavior but I think it would require more discussion among users.
