Updated it with better placement for Reagan and added FDR/Ike
Uh, that’s an interesting positioning of Trump.
Oh! But also, we’d love this at !politicalcompassmemes@lemmy.world
The problem is what people are viewing as “the center”. If you are talking about “center” They are saying the midway point between Biden and Trump… Which as the chart is noting, isn’t all that different on the economic side, and drastic movement on the social side.
From my pov, I don’t value economic over social issues, but I understand the need to have stable and resilient economies. I think if first you fix the economic issues then the social issues fall in line because there are less disadvantaged and socio-political and economic losers like we currently have in the working class who’d get attracted to far right ideologies. Note that the term losers is not a judgment here but how it’s used in terms of people who are favored or disfavored by policies.
Well, yeah, socio-political and economically left are two different things. But honestly, this “chart” is just very biased towards the argument that we should be less socio-politically progressive. Which is wrong, socio-politically progressive are things like that trans people aren’t discriminated against and can be addressed properly and get support, that gay people don’t need to fear kissing in public, that drugs like Cannabis are legal, that it’s okay to be different and such. Personally, while I’m left on both axes, that one is the more important one to me.
And honestly, Reagan was really socio-politically conservative. Maybe not as bad as Trump (although honestly, I don’t know), but like at most, that dot would be at the lower ending of the “Trump Republican” text. Just look at his war on drugs or lack of any help during the AIDS crisis.
Conversely, Obama and Biden are of course not economically very left (especially not when compared to western European countries), but there is still a huge difference to someone like Trump that made huge taxes for the rich, especially when that has been a major talking point in the election. So the differencece between Trump and Obama / Biden on that axis should be at least as much as between Reagan and Trump. He was worse than trump. By, every, single, measure. Trump just seems worse due to the collective damage of 40+ years of sabotage. We could play the game trump or Reagan and you’d be surprised how often the answer is yes.
Reagan was a true believer. Who sold out his Union. A venomous racist and homophobe. That would even make Fred and Donald trump pale a bit by comparison. And that’s saying something. Trump is a self centered waffling, empty vessel who cannot hold an idea let alone an ideal for more than a moment.
Well yeah, I sad “Maybe not as bad as Trump (although honestly, I don’t know)” because it has been placed there, but I’m 22 years old and not from the US, so while I’m politically interested, I don’t have very much knowledge about the exact policies of Reagan. So thanks for the addition
At your age and where you’re from. It’s certainly not a sin to not know. That’s reserved for all the people from here who are my age or older and do not know or care. And I’m sure I would be just as ignorant about your local politics myself. That said Reagan is absolutely worse for sure. A lot of people would hate to admit it. But Trump could be a good president if you were surrounded with right people. Unfortunately a bad person like him looking for acceptance and affirmation only surrounds himself with the worst people possible. People like Reagan
I updated it a lil bit
It’s wild that you can just update this posted image
Yeah, I agree re: Reagan. I think the overall point is more that there may need to be compromise to create a new coalition, because right now the Dems keep choosing economics that hurt the average person, and lean harder into socio-political progressivism to still appear left leaning.
