Greetings! For the past few weeks, i have been using Apple Maps for navigation. Only to realise that it does not have some specific places i go to regularly. And offline maps are just broken. And since i’m here, what are the best FOSS Map apps that have offline navigation? (i did try osmand and maps.me, theyre both paid)

Organic Maps is FOSS, supports offline navigation, and has an iOS version. It uses OSM maps you can download as needed.

        +1 on organic maps

Gets regular updates and improvements. They recently added (slightly experimental) track recording.

You can easily import bookmarks and tracks.

You can also edit osm data if you have an account and see something outdated like opening hours.

Supports TTS instructions for handsfree navigation if your phone has TTS installed.

Great recommendations. Just an FYI, your second link is broken because the markdown got messed up.

I personally use organic maps and osmand. Organic maps has traffic which makes it probably your best bet for online navigation but osmand has heaps of more advanced features including topography, weather, osm editing if your into volunteering, Wikipedia and heaps more.

IMO Organic Maps. I’ve used it for years now and it just works and it has a great offline navigation (you can download the areas).

Contributing to OSM through the app is quite easy too, so you should consider contributing the places you often visit that are not yet on the map. That helps the community too :).

Tho for some places I couldn’t find I’ve used Apple Maps to get the coordinates.

Like everyone else is mentioning, Organic Maps is probably an excellent option.

Personally, I also rather like Magic Earth, although it’s sadly not FOSS. But it does have crowd sourced traffic info, and imo a better search ux.

The search is definitely the better and a big downside for Organic Maps. However ever since OM added TTS a few months back I haven’t gone back to Magic Earth. ME’s spoken directions are so unclear

      crowd sourced traffic info

I did not know that about Magic Earth. I’ll have to test that out on my next trip into the city.

Now, that’s a great list with a lot of my preferred software on it – almost as had I written it myself! Good work. Keep it up.

Pretty sure that’s a plus subscription for if you want to support them. It gives you hourly map updates and weather and other stuff hardly anyone needs. But you can use the app fine without it.

I still prefer Organic Maps though.
