“Minouche Shafik, resigned this week in the wake of criticism for her handling of the protests, but not before overseeing the installation of fencing around the lawns of the school’s quad – the heart of campus life and the site of large protest encampments.”

I can’t think of a better symbol for free speech falling from grace, than the common space of a University quad being surrounded by a fence.

    That picture is chilling.

A hopeful thought: That fence has a lot of potential as a symbol… Should any local artists feel the need to anonymously contribute to campus culture…

    So … protest off campus.

Edit: Since people seem to be misunderstanding me, allow me to clarify. Protesting off campus is an escalation. “You don’t want protests on campus? Fine, we’ll take it to Main Street, and get way more people involved.”

Sure, or they could even protest separately at home where no one can see or hear them. That’ll be effective too!

You do realize that most public places are not on university campuses, right? And that protesting on campus is likely to only reach other students? And that most people are not university students?

          1. Protest X
          2. X doesn’t like you protesting them
          3. You protest where X can’t see or hear you
          4. …?
          5. Profit! Effective protest!
